6 Reduce child mortality

Where we are?

In Kyrgyzstan, the mortality rate among children under five years old has decreased from 2000 to 2003, it was caused by: decline in fertility, reduction in the number of marriages, internal and external labor migration. However from 2004 to 2007, increase in infant mortality was observed due to introduction of new national criteria of live births and stillbirths, as recommended by WHO (2004), which were significantly different from the official data available earlier. Since 2008, there was a tendency in decrease of child mortality again and by 2011, according to the National Statistics Committee, the rate was lower than in 2000, however, over 2 times higher than the target level (10.4 per 1,000 live births).

Since 2007, there was a tendency in decrease of the infant (under 1 year old) mortality rate in Kyrgyzstan, which was 21.2 by the end of 2011 versus 27.1 in 2008 per 1,000 live births, which is due to reduced early neonatal mortality. The decline is observed in both urban and rural areas, as well as in most parts of the country.
