The main objective of this workshop is to present the results of the initial study of the environmental indicators to discuss the main challenges ahead to implement these indicators. In 1994, the Kuwait Integrated Environmental Information Network (KIEIN) Project has been started at the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR), under the full support of the Supreme Council for Planning and Development and the Kuwait United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The current phase of the project (IV) is an integrated GIS –web-based solution to unify, enhance, document, and disseminate essential environmental indicator information and spatial decision support system (SDSS) tools and services to the whole community of Kuwait.  This phase is a building blocks on the previous phases of KIEIN project (I - III), which has developed set of Geo-environmental database.

It is anticipated that the rest of the time plan of the project will implement these indicators for the utmost benefit of the environmental status and sustainable development of the state of Kuwait. The completion of this project will result in for the first time of Kuwait a complete standardized list of environmental indicators that are compatible with the regional and international standards and framework. This is together with SDSS tool that is essential for sustaining the environment, protecting the biodiversity and making this information available online accessed by the whole community of Kuwait.

Finally, the main strategic goals of the KIEIN project could be listed as follows:

  • Act as a network for environmental information dissemination network in Kuwait.
  • Support and provide the decision/ policy makers, planners, and researchers in Kuwait with needed spatial and environmental information.
  • Contribute to the sustainable human resources development of the national staff in Kuwait in the field of GIS and related spatial technologies.
  • Building synergy with the stakeholders and beneficiaries to share and use the information together for better environment and sustainable development.
