UNDP/UNV Support “Let’s do it Kosovo” Campaign
On 24 May, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and United Nations Volunteers (UNV), under the UN Kosovo Team (UNKT) umbrella, joined the largest up-to-date cleaning campaign that gathered more than 130 thousand volunteers throughout Kosovo, as part of the global initiative “Let’s do it World”, with the aim of cleaning the environment.
During this whole day event around 1700 tones of household waste and 9700 tons of solid waste were collected by a wide range of volunteers including representatives of all central Kosovo institutions, municipal institutions and heads of municipalities, youth organizations, local and international non-governmental organizations, embassy staff in Pristina, UN Agencies personnel and other international staff working in Kosovo. Participation of persons with disabilities gave an added value to the campaign and SOS Children's Village and several other institutions of preschool children showed that participation went to all levels and ages.
United Nations Volunteers supported "Let's do it Kosovo" campaign by providing technical assistance, training "Let's do it Kosovo staff" in Volunteer Mobilization and Coordination and preparing guidelines in relation to volunteer management. Such efforts resulted in strengthening of "Let's do it Kosovo" volunteer component and increasing of participation of volunteers and their effective coordination. Comparing to last year's campaign, the number of volunteers who participated in the cleanup campaign is almost three times higher.
UNDP helped "Let's do it Kosovo" by covering the costs of 35 municipal coordinators, regional meeting costs, as well as the administrative, travel, communication and food supplies for the Volunteers and the main team of "Let's do it Kosovo". Furthermore, UNDP also covered the costs for the call centre and the cost of the Final Conference of "Let's do it Kosovo", which included the evaluation of activities, presentation of results of the campaign, and the monitoring plan.
