Kenyans, Urged to Unite and End Gender-based Violence

Violence against women continues to be a major challenge in the country and Kenyans have been urged to join hands in an effort to end this menace. According to data from the Kenya Demographic and Health Survey of 2009, 39% of Kenyan women have experienced violence since they were aged 15. It also puts the National Female Genital Mutilation prevalence at 27%, with the prevalence in North Eastern at 97%. The country will continue to lag behind its development goals unless it addresses issues of gender based violence. This was the message at the launch of the Africa UNiTE Campaign’s Kenya Chapter to end Gender-Based Violence in Nairobi on 15th November 2012.

Italy commits 150,000 Euros to support participation of women in the electoral process in Kenya

1 November 2012, Nairobi, Kenya—the Government of the Italy today committed 150,000 Euros (Kshs. 16,500,000) to support participation of women in the ongoing electoral process in Kenya.

Eradicating HIV and AIDS discrimination in Kenya

According to the National Aids Control Council, Kenya is ranked fourth in the world amongst countries with the highest HIV and AIDS prevalence rate at 6.3 %. South Africa tops the list with Nigeria and India coming in second and third. In Kenya, approximately 1.5 million People are Living with HIV (PLHIV), out of which 8 % are women and 4% are men. South Africa has a population of 5.6 million PLHIV, 3.3 million PLHIV in Nigeria and India with a population of 2.6 million PLHIV. Nearly 30 years into the epidemic, however, there are many countries in which negative legal environments undermine HIV responses and punish, rather than protect, people in need.

Building local capacities for greater access to climate change financing

The 20th century has been the warmest globally in the last 600 years. According to the IPCC 4th Assessment Report, in the western Indian Ocean region, a 30% loss of corals reduced tourism in Mombasa (and Zanzibar) and resulted in financial losses of about USD 12-18 million. The National Climate Change Response Strategy suggests that the financial requirement to move Kenya into a low carbon, climate resilient growth path is estimated at USD 2.75 billion per annum.

The Social Good Summit will host a hub event for the first time in Nairobi, Kenya. The event will be streamed live to millions of social media followers across the globe, linked to the main event in New York and another hub event in Beijing.

Preparing Communities for political participation

The Kenya National Integrated Civic Education Programme, is an integrated collaboration between the Government of Kenya and non-state actors. The K-NICE website is an interactive platform to allow Kenyans to access civic education on the Constitution of Kenya online via www.knice.go.ke . This will make the public informed and understand the constitution to cultivate a culture of democracy.
