In the conjunction with the International World Tuberculosis Day of March 24th, the UNDP National TB Programme organized the 6th National TB conference in Nasiryha -Thiqar from 24-25 of March 2014. Attended by Senior Officials from the Ministry of Health, Members from the Council of Representatives and governorate councils as well as the Director General of Health in Thiqar, the conference was an opportunity to share knowledge and practices between various governorates as well as to recognize the dedicated efforts Iraq has made in addressing this serious health issue.

Peer knowledge exchange is a powerful learning tool. This was demonstrated during the “2nd CSO Peer Knowledge Exchange Workshop” UNDP organized in Erbil from 25 to 27 February 2014. Launch of UNDP's project on “Enhancing protection for vulnerable women and girls among Syrian Refugees”
For this year's 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, UNDP organized a live painting performance along with a short play in Kavargosk camp in Erbil to raise awareness on sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) and its social, legal, physical and mental health repercussions within the refugee community.

Events included a concert in the National Theatre featuring world famous Iraqi oud musician, Naseer Shamma, a roundtable discussion livestreamed on YouTube, and the unveiling of a mural prepared by local artists calling for peace in Iraq.

Equity, equality, justice and inclusiveness agreed as principles of new Kurdistan Region Human Rights Board
32 members of the Kurdistan Region Independent Board for Human Rights from Duhok, Erbil, and Sulaymaniyah met from 16-19 September 2013 in Erbil to discuss the vision of the Board and the way forward. Their objective was to develop a jointly agreed vision, outline the Kurdistan Region’s human rights priorities, and enhance the understanding of international standards and operating frameworks of National Human Rights Institutions.

70 young people attended a UNDP organized Youth Training Camp at the American University in Sulaymaniyah from 18 to 24 August, from nearly one thousand expressions of interest. Many women in Iraq are economically, socially and politically marginalised. In an effort to help address the obstacles facing the empowerment of Iraqi women, UNDP facilitated a meeting of key gender stakeholders and specialists to finalise a new bill that will establish a High Commission of Gender Fairness in Iraq.

In a move to decentralise governance in Iraq, the Council of Representatives has passed an amended Provincial Powers Act that will drastically redefine the mandate of local governments. The adoption of the act represents a significant step towards a decentralised Federal system.

UNDP’s Iraq Public Sector Modernisation (I-PSM) Programme works to reform Iraq’s essential services in education, health, water and sanitation. As Phase Two of the programme begins, UNDP met with the President of the Kurdistan Region’s Parliament, Dr. Arsalan Baiz, as well as other members of government to reaffirm mutual commitments to the programme’s objectives.

The Iraq UN Global Compact (UNGC) Network supported the “Tamayouz Award”, an academic excellence award for architectural graduation projects in Iraqi universities. UNDP Iraq, hosting the Secretariat of the UNGC Network, supported the promotion of the award and identification of Iraqi companies, members of the Network and committed to responsible business conduct in the construction sector, to sponsor the initiative.

With support from UNDP Iraq, the Government of Iraq drafted the first version of The National Disaster Risk Reduction Law, currently under consideration by the Council of Ministers. This UNDP initiative helped Iraqi officials to identify the full range of natural disasters facing Iraq including floods, droughts, desertification, disease outbreaks and earthquakes.

In the Missan governorate, staff utilised the rise in technology amongst Iraqis by using a Short Message Service (SMS) campaign to learn more about the needs of citizens to increase public participation in local development matters.
