Bhubaneswar to Host Meet on Gender Concerns in Eastern States

26 Feb 2009

Bhubaneswar 26 February, 2009: Development professionals, grassroots activists, academicians, government officials and policymakers from Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Orissa and West Bengal will come together at a Regional Gender Workshop in Bhubaneswar on 27 and 28 February 2009. The Workshop has been organised by the United Nations, under the Solution Exchange (SE) initiative for the Gender Community. The members of this electronic network will help to strengthen knowledge across sectors so that they together can solve problems and effectively implement policies, projects and programmes on gender.

Through the Workshop, priority issues in individual states will be identified, and electronic queries introduced for discussion in the knowledge portal of the Gender Community. The Workshop is being organised in collaboration with Oxfam India, UNDP and Government of Orissa. The participants will also form ‘Action Groups’ on specific themes with clear objectives. These groups will make development more responsive to gender. Participants will also reflect on ways to involve more members from the grassroots in these five states. The Gender Community’s 2,600 members range from academicians, practitioners, consultants, government officials and policymakers. The work of the Gender Community is lead by UNIFEM and UNICEF.

The Solution Exchange Gender Community allows members to know each others’ views and learn about other experiences on gender, such as domestic violence, gender budgeting, social security, sexual harassment at work, gender gap and disparity, and gender learning tools. The issues raised and discussed by community members have been shared as inputs and guidelines to draft or advocate for Bills and Acts such as the Domestic Violence (DV) Act, design programme interventions and conduct advocacy campaigns.
