Six journalists from Assam, Jharkhand, Punjab and Odisha, are recipients of the 2014 Inclusive Media-UNDP Fellowships. The Fellowships seek to draw attention to rural distress and other development challenges through providing a voice to marginalized communities and groups. In doing so, the Fellowships aim to increase space in mainstream media for reporting on these issues.

UN Secretary-General’s Message on the 500-Day Mark to the Conclusion of the Millennium Development Goals - “500 Days Of Action To Build A Better World”
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today marked 500 days of action until the deadline to reach the Millennium Development Goals, known worldwide as the “MDGs.” He detailed four areas where governments can help fuel progress, including in backing social programmes despite budget cuts, and deepening cooperation with civil society, the private sector and other networks. Strategic investments in health, education, energy and sanitation are also key investment in areas that empower women and girls.

Staggering rates of poverty and high inequality threaten the gains in human development in South Asia. To protect these gains and ensure that all people are benefiting from the region’s growth, UNDP’s annual Human Development Report, released today in Tokyo, shows that the combination of social protection floors, universal basic services, full employment and programmes that specifically address discrimination and inclusion can help countries to irreversibly eradicate poverty.
