Celebrating Biodiversity in Nature

As part of the 7th CMS Vatavaran, an environment and wildlife film festival and forum, UNDP organized a session to raise awareness about the threats to the Himalayan ecosystem on 1 Feb 2014. During the session, an quiz competition was organized that enabled school children to understand the importance of biodiversity conservation in all ecosystems. In addition, a panel discussion with experts outlined threats to biodiversity conservation in Himalayas, importance of medicinal plants and associated traditional knowledge, issues related to bio-piracy, and legal mechanisms in place for protection of traditional knowledge.

India has a rich resource base of medicinal plants, plush with about 8,000 different species. According to the Government of India (GoI), traditional medicines are the sole means of health care for about 65 percent of the population.
