A Round Table Discussion - Judgment on Section 377: The Road Ahead

09 Jul 2012

UNDP India, in partnership with the Naz Foundation International Project DIVA and Center for Legal Aid and Rights is organizing a roundtable discussion ‘Judgment on Section 377: The Road Ahead’ to mark the third anniversary of the Delhi High Court’s landmark judgment to repeal Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code which criminalized homosexuality.

The Delhi High Court’s judgement to repeal the Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code was a landmark legal decision to strike down a punitive barrier and impediment to effective public health action. July 2012 marks the third anniversary of this ground-breaking judgment.

While the Delhi High Court judgement was hailed as a landmark decision for its strength and for the support it gave to the gay community in India, there was simultaneously a rising criticism from several sections of the society. Special Leave Petitions (SLPs) were filed in the Supreme Court of India challenging this decision. The sexual minority communities continue to struggle with entrenched social and religious biases that exist against them. To commemorate the Delhi High Court judgment and to discuss other issues surrounding this judgment, a roundtable discussion is organized by UNDP India, in partnership with the Naz Foundation International Project DIVA and Center for Legal Aid and Rights.
