    Contributing to Energy Saving: Recognition to UNDP

    S.N. Srinivas, Programmme Officer with UNDP India has been awarded the Hitech’s 2014 India’s Leading Energy Saving Expert Award for his contribution to energy saving in the steel sector. The Award was presented by HITEC India, a non-profit organization that aims to promote IT solutions, next generation networks and enabled services to India. The Awards recognize experts across industrial sectors that have made a significant contribution to using technologies to address the complex problems facing industry and Government in India.

    Celebrating Biodiversity in Nature

    As part of the 7th CMS Vatavaran, an environment and wildlife film festival and forum, UNDP organized a session to raise awareness about the threats to the Himalayan ecosystem on 1 Feb 2014. During the session, an quiz competition was organized that enabled school children to understand the importance of biodiversity conservation in all ecosystems. In addition, a panel discussion with experts outlined threats to biodiversity conservation in Himalayas, importance of medicinal plants and associated traditional knowledge, issues related to bio-piracy, and legal mechanisms in place for protection of traditional knowledge.

    Haoliang Xu Visits the Award-Winning Steel Re-Rolling Mill, MPK Steel in Jaipur

    On day 2 of his visit, Mr. Haoliang Xu, Assistant Administrator and Regional Director, UNDP visited the award-winning steel re-rolling mill, MPK Steel in Jaipur. The mill, with support from UNDP, the Ministry of Steel and the Global Environment Facility, reduced its energy consumption by 30%, cut coal consumption by 45% and increase productivity by 68%.

    Local Communities Play a Key Role in Preserving the Himalayas

    Local communities are crucial to the survival of the Himalayan ecosystem, one of the most biodiverse and ecologically important regions in Asia. This was the key message emerging from a three-day summit in Kohima, the capital of Nagaland in the North East of India. The summit brought together governments from India’s Himalayan states to discuss how a host of environmental and ecological pressures are threatening the existence of the ecosystem on which an estimated 700 million people in the region depend on. The Summit was supported by UNDP and other partners.

    World Environment Day

    UNDP has partnered with the Government of India to promote low carbon, climate resilient and inclusive development. Key areas of intervention are climate change (mitigation and adaptation), sustainable natural resource management (conserving biodiversity and addressing land degradation) and environmentally sound chemical management (phasing out of ozone depleting substances and reducing persistent organic pollutants). The loss of biodiversity and the changing climate are among the most prominent issues on the international agenda. These are not only environmental concerns; the issues are linked to the nature of economic development, poverty reduction, natural disasters, and peace and security. The health of the world’s biodiversity and climate is fundamental to all aspects of human well‐being.

    International Day for Biological Diversity

    On International Day for Biological Diversity, we’re focusing on the impact of our project in Sindhudurg coastal district, which is one of the most biodiverse areas in Maharashtra. The project, supported by the Government of Maharashtra and the Global Environment Facility, has been addressing biodiversity challenges while improving livelihoods of coastal communities since 2011 through sustainable fishing, agriculture, horticulture and conservation of mangroves, turtles and coral reef cover. The project has also sought to collaborate with local communities towards generating awareness about biodiversity amidst the threat of unsustainable fishing practices, rising pollution from fishing vessels and maritime traffic.

    Skill Development Training Programme on Sub-Megawatt Biomass-based Power Generation

    A UNDP supported training programme to develop skills of technicians to manage sub-megawatt, biomass-based power generation is being held from 25 Feb to 6 March in Bangalore. The programme will sensitize technicians on the principles of gasification, how to operate and maintain a gasifier and the safety issues involved in managing biomass-based power generation in India.

    Green Haat 2013 – Connecting Nature with our Lives

    The unique display and sale of eco products from across the country from 16 to 31 January 2013 included herbal remedies, handicrafts from non-timber forest products and organic food that are testament to the diversity and innovativeness of India’s local entrepreneurs. Organized by the Ministry of Environment and Forests, the 14-day display included participation of 14 groups that are recipients of the GEF Small Grants Programme implemented by UNDP.

    Rebeca Grynspan Meets Jayanthi Natarajan, Minister of Environment and Forests

    UNDP’s session in international seminar on energy access focused on on ‘Access to Modern Energy’ presented case studies from around the world to demonstrate the feasibility of provision of clean energy for livelihoods to the ‘energy poor’.
