    Skill Development Training Programme on Sub-Megawatt Biomass-based Power Generation

    A UNDP supported training programme to develop skills of technicians to manage sub-megawatt, biomass-based power generation is being held from 25 Feb to 6 March in Bangalore. The programme will sensitize technicians on the principles of gasification, how to operate and maintain a gasifier and the safety issues involved in managing biomass-based power generation in India.

    Green Haat 2013 – Connecting Nature with our Lives

    The unique display and sale of eco products from across the country from 16 to 31 January 2013 included herbal remedies, handicrafts from non-timber forest products and organic food that are testament to the diversity and innovativeness of India’s local entrepreneurs. Organized by the Ministry of Environment and Forests, the 14-day display included participation of 14 groups that are recipients of the GEF Small Grants Programme implemented by UNDP.

    Brainstorming towards a Competency Framework for India’s Civil Services

    A day-long brainstorming session, to provide crucial inputs to the draft framework which helps understand and define competency in the Indian Civil Services, was organized by UNDP in partnership with the Government of India. The draft competency framework developed as part of the PIIA project, a joint collaboration between UNDP and the Government of India, is being implemented by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), Ministry of Personal, Public Grievances and Pensions (MoP). A key objective is to support the shift towards the Competency-based Human Resource Management of the Indian Civil Services.

    Equitable Access to Justice: Legal Empowerment, Legal Aid and Making it work for the Poor and Marginalised

    UNDP organized an international conference to share good practices and innovative approaches to enabling legal empowerment and securing legal aid for poor communities. At the conference, two knowledge products- a training manual for judges on laws and issues related to marginalized communities; and user manual on Forest Rights Act and Panchayat (Extension to Scheduled Areas Act, 1996) were also released.

    Rebeca Grynspan Meets Jayanthi Natarajan, Minister of Environment and Forests

    Ms. Rebeca Grynspan, UN Associate Administrator and UNDP Associate Administrator met with Smt. Jayanthi Natarajan, Minister of Environment and Forests, Government of India during the Eleventh Conference of Parties to the Convention on Biodiversity Diversity. The Minister acknowledged UNDP’s strength in promoting international cooperation on development and innovation, and UNDP’s support in making learning a shared experience across nations. She said UNDP could play an important role as a bridge across nations to catalyse biodiversity conservation.

    Rebeca Grynspan Visits SWAAYAM: A Breakthrough Women’s Empowerment Initiative of UNDP & IKEA Foundation

    During her visit to India, UN Under-Secretary-General and UNDP Associate Administrator Rebeca Grynspan visited Uttar Pradesh to witness the work of Swaayam, a UNDP-IKEA Foundation partnership, being implemented since 2009. She also observed interactions between the woman village chief, village council, government officials and women citizens at a special village council meeting on 14 October 2012 in Pasiyahi Khurd village in Jaunpur district. At close of the meeting, Ms Grynspan addressed the gathering and highlighted that equal participation of both women and men in decision making and leadership was critical for sustained development. On 13 October 2012, Ms Grynspan inaugurated the Swaayam marketplace (Buyer-Seller marketplace) ‘Building market bridges for women producers’ in Varanasi. Several women, who received training as part of the UNDP-IKEA Foundation partnership Swaayam, displayed their hand-made products such as pappadums, incense sticks, fabrics, carpets, etc at the marketplace.

    Jairam Ramesh, Minister of Rural Development and Lise Grande, UNDP Resident Representative signed a Letter of Intent today to collaborate on governance and livelihood security for tribal development. The Letter of Intent was signed in the presence of UN Under Secretary General and UNDP Associate Administrator Rebeca Grynspan.

    Consultation on The Changing Role of Corporate Social Responsibility in Creating a Sustainable Future

    A roundtable consultation on the changing role of corporate social responsibility in creating a sustainable future was held in New Delhi on 12 October 2012. During the consultation, Rebeca Grynspan, UN Under-Secretary-General and UNDP Associate Administrator stressed on the scope and need for partnerships as a way for the industry to work cohesively towards a defined and important set of issues that, in turn, respond to the most pressing development challenges. Many leading corporations such as TATA, Biocon, Bharti and Mahindra presented key learnings from their initiatives on the ground in the field of education, community health, financial inclusion, women empowerment and sustainability while working with the most marginalized and excluded communities.
