    Winners of First-ever Government of India-UNDP Biodiversity Awards Announced

    The winners of Government of India-UNDP biodiversity awards that recognize outstanding models of biodiversity governance across the country have been announced. The awards were presented by Jayanthi Natarajan, Minister of State for Environment and Forests, Government of India and Rebeca Grynspan, UN Under-Secretary General and UNDP Associate Administrator at a ministerial reception hosted by the Ministry of Environment and Forests during the Eleventh Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity.

    Rebeca Grynspan Meets Jayanthi Natarajan, Minister of Environment and Forests

    Ms. Rebeca Grynspan, UN Associate Administrator and UNDP Associate Administrator met with Smt. Jayanthi Natarajan, Minister of Environment and Forests, Government of India during the Eleventh Conference of Parties to the Convention on Biodiversity Diversity. The Minister acknowledged UNDP’s strength in promoting international cooperation on development and innovation, and UNDP’s support in making learning a shared experience across nations. She said UNDP could play an important role as a bridge across nations to catalyse biodiversity conservation.

    Rebeca Grynspan Visits SWAAYAM: A Breakthrough Women’s Empowerment Initiative of UNDP & IKEA Foundation

    During her visit to India, UN Under-Secretary-General and UNDP Associate Administrator Rebeca Grynspan visited Uttar Pradesh to witness the work of Swaayam, a UNDP-IKEA Foundation partnership, being implemented since 2009. She also observed interactions between the woman village chief, village council, government officials and women citizens at a special village council meeting on 14 October 2012 in Pasiyahi Khurd village in Jaunpur district. At close of the meeting, Ms Grynspan addressed the gathering and highlighted that equal participation of both women and men in decision making and leadership was critical for sustained development. On 13 October 2012, Ms Grynspan inaugurated the Swaayam marketplace (Buyer-Seller marketplace) ‘Building market bridges for women producers’ in Varanasi. Several women, who received training as part of the UNDP-IKEA Foundation partnership Swaayam, displayed their hand-made products such as pappadums, incense sticks, fabrics, carpets, etc at the marketplace.

    A roundtable consultation on the changing role of corporate social responsibility in creating a sustainable future was held in New Delhi on 12 October 2012. During the consultation, Rebeca Grynspan, UN Under-Secretary-General and UNDP Associate Administrator stressed on the scope and need for partnerships as a way for the industry to work cohesively towards a defined and important set of issues that, in turn, respond to the most pressing development challenges. Many leading corporations such as TATA, Biocon, Bharti and Mahindra presented key learnings from their initiatives on the ground in the field of education, community health, financial inclusion, women empowerment and sustainability while working with the most marginalized and excluded communities.

    Ministry of Rural Development and UNDP Sign Letter of Collaboration In Support Of Rural Employment and Livelihood Programmes

    Under this agreement UNDP and the Ministry of Rural Development of Rural Development will collaborate to accelerate development efforts in 10 left-wing extremism affected districts with large tribal populations. The two entities will also intensify their on-going engagement on India’s flagship rural employment guarantee prrogramme that has provided jobs to over 54 million people. UNDP has committed $10 million over a five year period for the project with a commitment of $20 million from the Ministry.
