At least 22,980 people were killed and more than 42,000 are still missing after Cyclone Nargis hit Myanmar on 2-3 May, according to State authorities. Sweeping through the country’s largest city, Yangon, and the Ayeyarwaddy (Irrawaddy) Delta region, the cyclone has left hundreds of thousands of people homeless and in need of urgent humanitarian assistance. Both areas remain official disaster zones.

New Delhi - According to the UNDP-commissioned Human Development Report 2006, India is on its way to achieving the Millennium Development Goal on water, having made progress on enabling access to water to its rural and urban population. It also says that access to sanitation is lagging and there is need to accelerate progress.

New Delhi - A study, undertaken by the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER) and supported by the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) and UNDP finds that children from HIV households not only have a lower rate of enrolment than those from non-HIV households, but the drop-out rates are also higher and school attendance lower for those who have not dropped out.
