  • Consultation on The Changing Role of Corporate Social Responsibility in Creating a Sustainable Future

    A roundtable consultation on the changing role of corporate social responsibility in creating a sustainable future was held in New Delhi on 12 October 2012. During the consultation, Rebeca Grynspan, UN Under-Secretary-General and UNDP Associate Administrator stressed on the scope and need for partnerships as a way for the industry to work cohesively towards a defined and important set of issues that, in turn, respond to the most pressing development challenges. Many leading corporations such as TATA, Biocon, Bharti and Mahindra presented key learnings from their initiatives on the ground in the field of education, community health, financial inclusion, women empowerment and sustainability while working with the most marginalized and excluded communities.

  • Dance with Hands Held Tight

    Eighty percent of rural women in India are engaged in livelihoods that are dependent on natural resources. This intense relationship throws up a whole range of issues and questions. Does the policy recognize this intensity? Do we all value the knowledge systems, which may have developed among these women? How have women coped with coercion from state in their efforts to access natural resources? The film explores these questions through four focused engagements. The fisherwomen off the coast of Karnataka are distraught and distressed today. The fish catch on which they and their families have lived on has gone down. The Apatani Women of Ziro, the northeastern state of Arunachal Pradesh have controlled their unique fish-paddy agriculture for many years. However, the future of this agriculture is unsure. The adivasi (indigenous people) and dalit (SCs) women of Kashipur, the eastern state of Orissa have taken their fight over rights of Hill Broom, directly into the courtyard of the state. Not only this, the women of Sonebhadra, the central state of Uttar Pradesh have braved bullets and physical abuse of the state to protect their land from being taken over.

  • Dark Times

    This film focuses on the plight of cotton farmers and farmer suicides in the Yevatmal district in eastern Maharashtra after the collapse of the agriculture system. It also highlights the need for farmers to secure appropriate market price for the produce, concessions from the government and so on.

  • Elected to Lead a Village : Batula Devi

    This short video follows the life of Batula Devi, the sarpanch of Kekar Rahin village in eastern Uttar Pradesh. As sarpanch, Batula Devi now helps ensure children, especially girls, are sent to school with the support of the local education committee. She, like many other recently elected women representatives in her area, received training in political processes and local governance as part of the UNDP Swaayam project, which aims to empower 50,000 women – socially, economically and politically in 500 villages in eastern Uttar Pradesh.

  • Enabling Legal and Political Empowerment of Women in Uttar Pradesh

    Sony Jaiswal was provided training in legal rights as part of UNDP’s partnership with the IKEA Foundation in Uttar Pradesh, Swaayam. The training is helping Sony, now a paralegal worker with the Swaayam project, educate other women in her village about different government schemes, raise awareness on women’s political and legal rights and generate additional income for her family.

    India has a quarter of the world’s bamboo reserves which have the potential to generate livelihoods and help reduce our dependence on timber. This film profiles the Cane and Bamboo Sub-Programme, a joint effort of the Ministry of Textiles and the UNDP.

    Elected panchayat member, Gyan Devi from village Gyanpur in East Uttar Pradesh is one of over 200 women elected to the local panchayat in project districts supported by the UNDP Swaayam project. In this video, she describes her journey – from a quiet, shy woman to an articulate leader determined to fulfill the aspirations of her family and community.
