The Power of Energy Efficiency: Transforming the Indian Steel Re-rolling Sector

These videos provide an overview of UNDP’s partnership with the Ministry of Steel, Government of India and the Global Environment Facility which is helping steel re-rolling mills address barriers to large-scale commercialization of energy-efficient technologies. The video demonstrates how interventions such as introduction of technology packages and capacity building programmes have significantly increased monetary and fuel savings both in oil and coal-fired units and reduced GHG emissions by up to 45 percent. These units (Ludhiana steel re-rolling mill; MPK Steel, Rajasthan; Pulkit steel re-rolling mill, Pondicherry; Vaishnavi Ispat, Durgapur; and Vivek re-rolling mill, Punjab) have also recorded an increase in productivity between 15 and 25 percent since 2004.

The Power of Energy Efficiency: Ludhiana Steel Re-Rolling Mill

UNDP’s partnership with the Ministry of Steel, Government of India and the Global Environment Facility has reduced greenhouse gas emissions and improved energy efficiency in a steel re-rolling mill in Ludhiana, one of the most polluted cities in the world. This partnerships through interventions such as technology improvements and capacity building have resulted in reduction of fuel consumption in the mill by 28 percent, power consumption by 27 percent, and burning loss by 37 percent.  

The Power of Energy Efficiency: MPK Steel, Rajasthan

Year: 2012

A UNDP-Ministry of Steel partnership supported by the Global Environment Facility has helped MPK Steel in Rajasthan to create an efficient and profitable business that addresses climate change concerns. The project has helped the mill reduce power consumption by 30 percent, cut coal consumption by 45 percent and increase productivity by 68 percent.

The Power of Energy Efficiency: Pulkit Steel Re-Rolling Mills, Pondicherry

Year: 2012

Pulkit Steel Re-rolling mills in Pondicherry is a model unit of a national project on energy efficiency, implemented by UNDP and the Ministry of Steel with support from the Global Environment Facility. The partnership has helped Pulkit mills improve productivity by 53 percent, reduce net carbon emissions to zero and win the energy conservation award from the Government of Pondicherry.

The Power of Energy Efficiency: Vaishnavi Ispat, Durgapur

The UNDP-Ministry of Steel partnership supported by the Global Environment Facility has helped Vaishnavi Ispat reduce energy consumption by half and reduce carbon emissions significantly.

The Power of Energy Efficiency: Vivek Re-Rolling Mill, Punjab

Year: 2012

A UNDP-Ministry of Steel intiative supported by the Global Environment Faciltiy has helped Vivek re-rolling mill in Punjab install an upgraded re-heating furnance, which in turn, has reduced coal consumption by over 25 percent and boosted production by 74 percent.

Energy Efficiency in Steel Re-rolling Mills

Steel production is an energy-intensive process that generates a large amount of solid waste and greenhouse gases. In partnership with the Ministry of Steel, Government of India, the project aims to increase energy efficiency of steel re-rolling mills sector, reduce associated emissions and enable penetration of environmentally-sustainable, energy efficient technologies in this sector.
