Our Projects

UNDP projects are designed in consultation with national stakeholders and contribute directly to the Government of India – UNDP Country Programme and the United Nations Development Action Framework (UNDAF). Projects are aligned to one or more of the following programme areas -poverty reduction, democratic governance, environment and energy, crisis prevention and recovery and HIV and development. All UNDP projects are nationally executed under the signed country programme, and are implemented in partnership with national partners in one or more of the UNDAF states of Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.

  • Access to Justice for Marginalized People (2008-2012)

    In partnership with the Department of Justice, Ministry of Law and Justice, Government of India, the project focuses on strengthening access to justice for the poor, particularly women, scheduled castes, tribal communities and minorities, through developing strategies and initiatives that address the barriers they face accessing justice in legal, social, economic and political domains.

  • Capacity Development for Local Governance (2008-2012)

    In partnership with the Ministry of Panchayati Raj, Government of India, the project aims to strengthen the capacities of elected representatives and officials, institutions and processes at various levels to improve service delivery through training, networking and knowledge sharing.

Disaster Risk Reduction

  • Disaster Risk Reduction (2009-2012)

    In partnership with the National Disaster Management Authority, the project aims to raise awareness and build resilience of the communities to disaster-related risks, and to strengthen the capacities of the state and district Disaster Management Authorities to better deal with disasters and post-disaster recovery efforts.

  • Kosi Flood Recovery and Reconstruction (2009-2011)

    The 2008 Kosi floods affected three million people in Bihar, one of India’s poorest states. In partnership with the government of Bihar, this project supported recovery processes in the aftermath of the floods, including settlement and habitat planning to reduce disaster risk. An owner-driven reconstruction pilot has since been upscaled across flood-affected districts in the state.

HIV and Development

  • Support to National Response to Mainstreaming HIV (2008-2012)

    In partnership with the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO), the project aims to expand coverage and impact of the national HIV response by mainstreaming HIV in selected ministries; to enhance capacities of civil society groups to protect human rights of PLHIVs and of government officials to effectively manage National AIDS Control Programme (NACP-III).

  • Support to Expand Coverage and Impact of National Response for Sexual Minorities (2011)

    In partnership with the National AIDS Control Organisation, the project aims to strengthen community systems that reach MSM, hijra and transgender communities and relevant health system resources. It also seeks to increase awareness on advocacy-related efforts for sexual minorities.

Environment and Energy

  • India’s Second National Communication to United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (2007-2012)

    As a party to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), India submitted its Initial National Communication in 2004. The project, with support from the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India, aims to support the preparation and submission of India’s Second National Communication (SNC) to UNFCCC. The SNC will focus on strengthening the capacities created during the early phase, and to take into account the changing national priorities and developmental needs.

  • Sustainable Industrialization: Building Stakeholder Capacities and Involvement (2007-2012)

    The project, in partnership with the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India, aims to influence industries to voluntarily improve their environmental performance, strengthen regulatory systems and increase community engagement in local industrialization processes.
