  • National Committee on IYV+10

    The first IYV+10 planning meeting was organized on 16 February, 2011 in New Delhi by UNV Country Office. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss formulation of the National Committee and taskforce to plan IYV+10 activities. Twenty organizations participated in the meeting and included representatives from the Government, UN agencies, civil society organizations, educational institutes, media and corporate houses.

  • UNV Karamveer Chakra

    On the occasion of the 10th Anniversary of International Year of Volunteers UNV India and iCONGO (Indian Confederation of NGOs) are pleased to announce UNV Karamveer Chakra. This award is an endeavour to promote volunteerism in general and recognition of exemplary voluntary actions in particular by recognising the invaluable contribution by volunteers to the achievement of MDGs.

  • Seminar on Youth Volunteerism

    A one day seminar on Youth Volunteerism was held on 09 August 2011, at the UN Conference Hall, New Delhi. The Seminar was jointly organized by the Commonwealth Youth Programme(CYP), Asia Center, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, and United Nations Volunteers(UNV). The aim of the seminar was to mark the conclusion of International Year of Youth, and observance of the International Year of Volunteers (IYV+10), first observed in 2001 as per a mandate given by the UN General Assembly with the objective to enhance the recognition, facilitation, networking and promotion of volunteer service.

  • Development through Sports

    Engaging youth in the community development initiatives is a promising way of providing them opportunities in meaningful ways. They can be very valuable resources to help close the gaps by lending support to developmentally appropriate activities and challenges. Their involvement also strengthens student-centred learning.

    New Delhi, 05 September 2011- UNDP and United Nations Volunteers join a national awareness on climate change campaign “My Earth, My Duty” launched by Zee News.

  • UNV-India Invites Photographs Showcasing ‘Volunteering to Make a Difference’

    To  draw attention to the dedicated community of volunteers and to mark IYV+10, UNV-India proposes publishing a special volume on Volunteerism which would further advance the recognition and promotion of volunteerism and enhance its facilitation at the local, national and international levels. The selected photographs would be considered for a  publication on volunteerism during 2011.

  • Inceptum 2011

    To raise awareness on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and to celebrate the Tenth Anniversary of  International Year of Volunteers (IYV+10), Joining Hands, WWF and UNV organized an Inter-School Debate – ‘Inceptum 2011’ on 18 October 2011, New Delhi. Topic of the Debate was “Individual Social Responsibility; A Distant dream in achieving the Millennium Development Goals in India”.

  • The Peace Gong-the Children's Newspaper

    A special issue of “The Peace Gong-the children’s newspaper” based on the four objectives of IYV+10 —recognition, facilitation, networking and promotion of Volunteerism—has been initiated by Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore Foundation in association with UNV India and Anant Vikas Trust. The aim of this issue is to capture the voices of children across the world on VOLUNTEERING to facilitate efforts by children for a peaceful world. In view of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) targets, IYV+ 10 offers an opportunity to celebrate but also to assess the progress made towards achieving the objectives of IYV.

  • UNV Karamveer Chakra: National Medallion for proactive Volunteer Action

    Gaurav Gaur, Hari Pado Biswas, Hemant Kumar Yadav, Rahul Pawa and Santosh Kumar were conferred the UNV Karamveer Chakra in an award function held on 27 November in New Delhi. This award is an endeavour to promote volunteerism and acknowledge exemplary voluntary actions by recognizing the invaluable role played by volunteers towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals.

Volunteering in India: Contexts, Perspectives and Discourses

The publication presents the viewpoints and experiences of eminent people and volunteers from different disciplines on the ethos, tradition and diversity of volunteering in the Indian context. It reflects on the challenges and opportunities to volunteering such as changing social structures and new complexities in the social structure; increasing individualization; increasing episodic volunteering; motivations to volunteering, especially amongst youth; and opportunities to volunteering due to conflicts in different parts of the society and growing inequalities.
