The Launch of the Western Region Human Development Report

01 Oct 2013

The maiden Western Region Human Development Report (HDR), jointly produced by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Western Region Coordinating Council, with close collaboration with the traditional leadership of the Region will be launched in Takoradi on 3rd October, 2013. It will be Ghana’s first-ever regional HDR initiated and funded by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The report represents a tangible step towards amplifying the capabilities of the people of the Western Region (WR) by creating opportunities that enable them to pursue the lives they value. Such an outcome will be especially timely for it will enable the WR to continue to make progress towards the 2015 targets for the Millennium Development Goals, and set the stage for human development beyond 2015. The theme — ‘managing development opportunities for a secure future’ — reflects that goal.

The launch will be chaired by the Omanhene of the Essikado Traditional Area, Nana Kobina Nketsia V. The Norwegian Ambassador to Ghana H.E. Hege Hertzberg will share the Norwegian best practices and examples in exploiting Oil and Gas, while the UN Resident Coordinator and the UNDP Resident Representative, Ms. Ruby Sandhu-Rojon will offer perspectives on the UNDP’s Human Development approach. Prof. Cletus Dordunoo will also make a presentation of the report and the keynote address will be delivered by the Western Regional Minister, Hon. Ebenezer K. T. Addo. Finally, the report will be jointly launched by Hon. Ebenezer K. T. Addo, Nana Kobina Nketsia and Ms. Ruby Sandhu-Rojon. Participating in the event will be members of the Western Regional House of Chiefs, the Local Government Minister, members of the Regional Coordinating Council, Heads of Security Forces, MMDCEs, MPs, Development Partners, Religious groups, the media and civil society.

The completion of the Western Region Human Development Report is not only a major milestone for UNDP but also for the Western Regional Coordinating Council, the Chiefs and people of Essikado, businesses, citizens, and academia. The launch is opened to the general public.
