Consolidating transparency and accountability in Ghana

Description

This initiative stems from the Government of Ghana’s priority to scale up efforts to improve access to justice and fight corruption. Planned activities during the 2013-2014 period; would build on lessons from previous anti-corruption measures and new perspectives to combat corruption and strengthen reform in the public sector and the justice delivery system.

A holistic methodology would be adopted to strengthen the administration of justice and the capacity of citizens to access the legal system, particularly women and the marginalized. UNDP in Ghana would partner with key oversight institutions like the parliament, judiciary, the ombudsman, the public procurement system and the various anti-corruption bodies to promote access to justice and implement Ghana’s National Anti-Corruption Action Plan (NACAP) since these are priority areas for government.

Accomplishments

To promote transparency and accountability in public health delivery, community score card meetings have been held in 12 communities in six districts in the Central, Eastern and Volta Regions of Ghana with community members, officials of the mutual health scheme, and health delivery personnel. Moreover, Parliament of Ghana was engaged to facilitate the approval of the National Anti-Corruption Action Plan (NACAP).  Again, 35 state attorneys have received training on the prosecution of corruption and money laundering cases while a communication strategy for the public education on customs structures, rules and procedures as an anti-corruption measure has been developed.
