Consolidating peace in Ghana

The institutionalization of  the National Peace Council ( NPC) in 2012 had the aim of promoting values of reconciliation, tolerance, trust and confidence building , mediation and dialogue as responses to conflict, as well as supported the peaceful elections in 2012.

Over the 2013-2014 period, UNDP is providing support for the implementation of NPC’s strategic plan (2012-2016), promote greater communication and synergy between actors at various levels of the peace architecture and clarify points of intervention in emerging conflicts, encourage research and the increased participation of women in conflict prevention. The activities to be implemented includes building the capacity of National Peace Council Members and harnessing the capacities of partner organizations, particularly civil society actors, to end recurrent conflicts and promote lasting peace.
It contributes to the UNDAF outcome of institutionalising a national peace architecture and conflict prevention mechanisms.

Accomplishments

Till date, the project has supported the establishment of ten Regional and four District Peace Council secretariats with full complement of technical staff in place. This has effectively increased the total staff strength of the National Peace Council (NPC) to 40 from 2. The project has also supported the completion of conflict mapping in the Northern and Middle Zones of Ghana.

Moreover, 13 NPC Board members and 10 key staff have been trained in Conflict Mediation Negotiation and Dialogue to intervene in ongoing conflicts. A case in point is the intervention in 5 conflicts situations at Bawku, Alavanyo-Nkonya, Bunpkurugu, Adjaade and Kajaji by members of the NPC and Peace Architecture. Consultations and mapping of Peace actors in the Brong Ahafo, Volta and Upper East Regions have also been completed.

Finances



Total budget for 2013 is US$371,700). As at 31st October, 2013 delivery stood at US$365,889 representing 92%.
