Agriculture has vast yet untapped potential in Georgia. With more than 50% of the population living in rural areas, it can become a driving force of the national economy and a dominating source of income for more than half of Georgians. Nevertheless, the sector is still underdeveloped and its share in the Domestic Gross Product (GDP) never exceeded 7%.

Insufficient access to education and information is among the impediments for the sector to become strong and effective.

UNDP, with funds from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), has been assisting Georgia to establish a modern system of vocational education and training in the area of agriculture and set up advisory services for farmers across the country.

What We Do

We contribute to the development of high quality education and retraining in the area of agriculture, establishment of the advisory services - agriculture extension system, for farmers, and to the improvement of livelihoods of the rural population in Georgia.

We assist to:

  • Promote training and professional development of vocational teachers, extension service consultants and specialists.
  • Deliver high quality training and extension services to farmers.
  • Improve access to resources, infrastructure and best practices for the regional and local agriculture entities.
  • Boost coordination and enhance policy planning at the national level.
  • Establish a cooperation platform to bring together stakeholders from the public and private sectors.

Expected Results

  • More than 10 thousand farmers will receive high quality training and advisory services in eight vocational colleges and seven state consultancy centres.
  • Public and private cooperation and partnership will be enhanced in the field of vocational education, training and extension services in agriculture.
