Have Your Say on Making Indonesian Palm Oil Sustainable

July 20, 2017

Over the next eight weeks, the Indonesian palm oil platform, known as the Forum Kelapa Sawit Berkelanjutan Indonesia (FoKSBI), is inviting the national and international public to comment on the latest version of the National Action Plan for Sustainable Palm Oil.

As the world’s largest producer and exporter of palm oil, Indonesia counts on this much-used commodity to drive growth and development. In recent years the industry has boomed and triggered controversy. With Indonesia set to double production by 2020 to meet rising demand, the challenge now is how to maximize the economic and development benefits, while minimizing the adverse social and environmental effects.

To help achieve this critical balance, since 2014, the government has led a multi-stakeholder dialogue process, supported by UNDP and involving representatives from across the palm oil sector including producers, buyers, government agencies and multi-national companies.

This process produced a draft National Action Plan for Sustainable Palm Oil. To date, more than 500 people representing 100 organizations in Indonesia and abroad have provided input. Now FoKSBI is inviting the public to comment on the Plan.

"This is now a specific opportunity for international stakeholders to provide input and comments on the draft. It is also a time to begin to consider potential areas of engagement with the plan as it moves forward to completion and then, more importantly, implementation," Ir. Dedi Junaedi, M.Sc, the Director of Processing and Marketing of Estate Crops, Directorate General of Estate Crops, Ministry of Agriculture/ National Project Director Sustainable Palm Oil Initiative, wrote earlier this week.
