Joint Programme on Gender Equality and Women Empowerment

What is the project about

This joint programme is undertaken by  six UN agencies (UNDP, UNICEF, ILO, UNFPA, UNWOMEN and UNESCO) in order to support national policy and strategy on gender equality and women empowerment at both federal and regional level.

The project implemented in two phases, with Phase 1 having started in January 2011 and lasting until June 2012, while Phase 2 is running from July 2012 to December 2015.

UNDP’s contribution focuses on strengthening institutional capacity of gender mainstreaming in the federal gender machineries and that of the four main regions (Oromia, Amhara, SNNPR and Tigray).

UNDP’s key areas of intervention include development of standard tools for gender mainstreaming, gender budgeting and gender auditing, establishment and strengthening of generation and use of sex-disaggregated data, support to establishment of gender resources centers and capacity building trainings on gender mainstreaming.

What have we accomplished so far

So far about 6 sector line ministries and 4 regional states have adapted and used three standard tools, developed with the support of UNDP, on gender mainstreaming, gender sensitive budgeting and gender auditing and adaptation of the tools by key ministries and regional states.

A number of capacity building trainings have been held for gender experts and officials, including training of 100 parliamentarians in 2012.

With UNDP support, Ethiopia was able to conduct a comprehensive national capacity assessment of the gender machineries. Following the assessment, a report was produced that allowed for a the a capacity development response.

UNDP has also supported the conduct of gap assessment in 21 key ministries on the generation and use of sex disaggregated data.
