    A rural community calls for an end to FGM

    recently visited the village of Beir Anbar in the district of Koft, Qena governorate, and listened to the powerful statement this community is conveying to the rest of the country to put an end to the practice of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). The whole village, from young schoolchildren to village elders came together to denounce FGM as "violent", "wrong" and "harmful".

    UNDP Egypt working with the Social Fund for Development on Gender Equality

    The Social Fund for Development (SFD) was established by Presidential Decree in 1991. It is chaired by the Prime Minister of the Arab Republic of Egypt and managed by a Technical Secretariat composed of development experts. SFD acts as a social and economic safety net and a state's mechanism geared towards reducing poverty and creating jobs. SFD's mandate is to promote and suppor small and micro enterprises (MSEs), provide financial and non-financial services, carry out employment projects in infrastructure and community development, and coordinate with all parties concerned with small enterprises for drawing up necessary polices for their development.

    New Phase of Public Works begins to provide Jobs to Youths

    Four new UNDP labour-intensive public works projects were launched on 28 August 2014 for the governorates of Giza, Behiera, Aswan and New Valley to provide emergency jobs and community infrastructure to the most disadvantaged districts in the region. The projects were signed between the Social Fund for Development (SFD), UNDP’s implementing partner, and the local governorates. The ceremony was held in the presence of H.E Mr. Monir Fakhry Adb el Nour, the Minister of Trade and Industry, Ms. Anita Nirody, the UNDP Resident Representative and Mr. Naofumi Hashimoto, the Minister of the Embassy of Japan in Egypt.
