Poverty Reduction

With UNDP support, the Social Fund for Development has created an average of 285,000 jobs per year during the past four years by supporting Medium, Small and Micro Enterprise creation with micro-credit, business development services and entrepreneurship building. UNDP has also helped integrate job creation and income generation within many of its poverty and non-poverty programmes, including in such areas as Pro-Poor Horticulture Value Chains in Upper Egypt, IT Clubs, community development, handicraft development and integrating mine victims in productive work.

UNDP also helped the Government develop a conditional cash transfer model in support of better targeting of the poor with social protection benefits that is currently being piloted targeting 13,000 families in 65 of the poorest villages in two Governorates with the aim of testing the effectiveness of cash transfers as an alternative to direct subsidies. UNDP’s support to the Government’s effort in reforming the social insurance system have resulted in the issuance of more than 780,000 smart cards for social insurance payments, in addition to the establishment of a wide array of service points and cash dispensing machines.
