Participatory Strategic Urban Planning for Alexandria City till 2032

What is the project about?

The project is expected to develop a Strategic Urban Plan (SUP) for Alexandria City to provide the road map that will guide development in the city till year 2032, reflecting the Governorate’s vision and goals. The SUP will function as a specific instrument of management to encourage citizen participation in decision-making regarding city development. It will also allow the project to establish partnerships for designing and managing sustainable projects for Alexandria. Moreover, the project is expected to improve the capabilities of the Regional Center and Local Partners to enhance leadership qualities and promote efficient implementation and management. It will also develop an Urban Management Strategy and Guidelines to ensure a sustainable long-term city development.

What have we accomplished so far?

  • A communication strategy was developed for the project to increase project outreach and communication with all stakeholders.
  • The vision for the city is being prepared to be shared with stakeholders for consultations. This includes conducting detailed spatial analysis and a diagnosis of urban fabric issues and future growth trends for Alexandria city. An analysis of the city’s spatial characteristics was also completed.
  • The master plan for the medical city was finalized and is ready for implementation.
  • Analysis of the present situation of the Matar Lake Area, including urban fabric, transportation, environment, economy and agriculture, was conducted. This also includes in-depth analysis of the area’s strengths, opportunities, weaknesses and threats.
  • A detailed plan was  prepared for the establishment of an Olympic City.
  • A Geographical Information System (GIS) is being developed and tested.
