What is the project about?

In partnership with the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation and the Ministry of Defense, to support the development of the North West Coast and Inland Desert through a) the establishment of the Executive Secretariat for Mine Clearance and the Development of the North West Coast (NWC)(Exec Sec) b) the development of a communication strategy and resource mobilization strategy; c) the conduct of de-mining activities based on clearly identified humanitarian and development needs; and d) the conduct of mine risk education and victim assistance activities.

What have we accomplished so far?

  • Procurement of state of the art technology to assist in the clearance of mines and Unexploded Ordnances
  • Clearance of 32,000 acres of contaminated land by the Ministry of Defense and their handover to respective ministries for development purposes
  • Production of communication and resource mobilization strategy papers
  • Establishment of an Executive Secretariat at the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation to serve as a coordination unit between civilian Egyptian Government departments, the Military and the civil society in addition to the UN and donors’ community on all issues associated with demining,
  • 479 male and 28 female mine victims to receive financial support in the form of a pension and 400 male and 10 female mine victims in the form of grants
  • Provision of artificial limbs for 241 amputees
  • Capacity building of four active and reputable NGOs that target landmine victims and/or their families in Matrouh Governorate in the areas of financial management, project management, volunteer management and strategic planning, in order to prepare them to effectively and efficiently implement income generation activities.
