UNSG Message to Eco Forum Global Annual Conference Guiyang 2014
H.E. Mr. Ban Ki-Moon, United Nations Secretary-General
I am pleased to send greetings to the Eco-Forum Global.
Energy is the golden thread that connects economic growth, increased social equity and a healthier environment. The Sustainable Energy for All initiative binds these priorities and brings together governments, the private sector and civil society to address them. By 2030, the initiative aims for universal energy access, double the rate of efficiency and double the proportion of renewables in the global energy mix.
These bold but feasible goals will open a world of opportunity for billions of people and lead to massive new scope for investment. But we cannot meet these objectives without your support and engagement. The Eco-Forum Global provides an important platform to facilitate cooperation and action among key decision-makers in China.
With its dynamic private sector, supportive public policies and vibrant universities, China is a global leader in the production and use of clean energy technology. I therefore welcome the appointment of Mr. Wu Xinxiong, Vice Chairman of the National Development and Reform Commission, and Administrator of the National Energy Administration, to the Advisory Board of the Sustainable Energy for All initiative.
I rely on all participants at this Eco-Forum to lead by example within your government sectors, industries and networks, and recruit a growing alliance of influence and action. In all areas we have a choice: sustainable development or business as usual. The inter-related efforts to shape a post-2015 development agenda and adopt a new global legal agreement on climate change present unprecedented opportunities for business to pursue essential interests while advancing sustainable development and helping to eradicate extreme poverty. In particular, trade and knowledge exchange with Africa will be important in achieving our goal of sustainable energy for all.
I count on your leadership to bring the public and private sectors together to advance our collective endeavour -- and I urge you to bring your actions to the Climate Summit that I am convening in New York on 23 September. Together, we can create a cleaner, safer, more prosperous world for all.
I wish you a productive meeting.
