A photograph of female and male students in Pakistan working together on a circuit board in their engineering class was one of three winning photographs of a global anti-poverty photo contest. The other two winners, judged by UNDP Goodwill Ambassador and internationally-acclaimed actor Antonio Banderas and four photo journalists, feature a boy on his way to school in India and fishermen in Viet Nam bringing in the day’s catch.

Punitive laws and human rights violations limit access to HIV prevention and care services for men who have sex with men and transgender people in Asia Pacific
Some 19 of 48 countries in the Asia Pacific region continue to criminalize male-to-male sex, and these laws often taken on the force of vigilantism, frequently leading to abuse and human rights violations. Correspondingly, HIV prevalence has reached alarming levels among men who have sex with men and transgender populations in many countries of the region. If countries fail to address the legal and human rights context of HIV, this already critical situation is likely to become worse. The implementation of effective, national HIV responses requires governments to consider and address the effects of laws and law enforcement practices on the health of men who have sex with men and transgender people.

UNDP announced today in Beijing that its National Goodwill Ambassador Zhou Xun generously donated her Champion of the Earth award winnings (US$ 19,975) to UNDP’s Yushu Earthquake Emergency Rehabilitation of Community Infrastructure in Earthquake Affected Areas Project, to meet the immediate needs of Yushu earthquake survivors through providing them with fire-preventive facilities for their resettlement centers.

World-renowned music artist and National Goodwill Ambassador of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) China, Ms. Zhu Zheqin (a.k.a. Dadawa) kicked-off today in Beijing her "Chinese Ethnic Handicraft Collection Tour," as part of her joint initiative with UNDP "Show the World". In her capacity as UNDP's national Goodwill Ambassador, Dadawa will promote culture-based development for ethnic minorities in China through preserving culturally invaluable ethnic music and handicrafts that are at risk of being lost.

Beijing, China - On Children’s Day, 1st June, disadvantadged children let their dreams fly kicking a football with their volunteer playmates. The “Freeing your dreams, growing together” event was the first activity implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme supported project, “Strengthening Volunteerism for Development in China through the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games”, in cooperation with the Beijing Home of Migrant Workers, a volunteerism for development pilot project. It was supported by the Henan Representative Office in Beijing (most migrant workers in Beijing come from underdeveloped Henan province), and jointly organized with Voluntary Service Overseas, China (VSO) to contribute to the 1GOAL global campaign. 1GOAL is bringing together footballers, fans, charities, corporations and individuals to encourage action towards the attainment of the ambitious Millennium Development Goal of achieving universal primary education.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in partnership with Olympus Corporation and the Agence France-Presse (AFP) Foundation, launched the second annual Picture This photo contest today in Johannesburg, South Africa. The contest, titled Picture This: We Can End Poverty, seeks to show the inspirational work that is being done in many countries to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), eight goals agreed on by world leaders to halve extreme poverty by 2015.

The United Nations announced today it is stepping up efforts to assist the people affected by last month’s devastating Yushu earthquake. Several UN agencies are providing emergency relief assistance in the shelter, food, nutrition, health, education and sanitation sectors. These relief efforts are partly funded by a grant of US $4.7 million from the UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF).

On 4 May 2010, Ms. Renata Lok-Dessallien officially presented to H.E. Mr. Yang Jiechi, Chinese Foreign Minister, the Letters of Credence accrediting her as the United Nations Resident Coordinator and United Nations Development Program Resident Representative in China. Foreign Minister Yang welcomed Ms. Lok-Dessallien to China and expressed his hopes for continued enhancement of the cooperation between China and the UN System including UNDP and assured her of all necessary facilitation for her work.

The United Nations System in the People’s Republic of China welcomes the appointment of Ms. Renata Lok Dessallien as the country’s new Resident Coordinator. She succeeds Mr. Khalid Malik, whose term concluded in early April 2010. Ms. Dessallien, who will also serve as the country’s UNDP Resident Representative, enters office upon serving in the same capacity with the United Nations’ country office in Bangladesh.

If the negative impacts of climate change and environmental degradation are not adequately addressed in China, there is a danger that three decades of social and economic achievements may be reversed, according to the latest China Human Development Report. China’s most strategic choice is to embark on a low carbon development path that will preserve and increase its human development achievements in the years to come, says the publication which was commissioned by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in partnership with Renmin University of China.

According to the latest China Human Development Report entitled, China and a Sustainable Future, Towards a Low Carbon Economy and Society, China faces “no other choice” but to shift to a low carbon approach in shaping the country’s future social and economic development agenda. Commissioned by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in partnership with Renmin University of China, the publication asserts that the most strategic option for policymakers is to embark on a low-carbon development path that will preserve and increase its human development achievements in the years to come.
