The Chinese Government and UNDP China is helping Zambia and Ghana increase access to energy in rural areas, and more importantly, build their capacity for absorbing the transferal of innovative renewable energy solutions and make them work on the ground. Collaborating with Ministry of Science and Technology of China and governments of Zambia and Ghana, and UNDP China, the China-Zambia and China-Ghana South-South Cooperation on Renewable Energy Technology Transfer projects were launched on 18 August 2014.

Given the nature of the global HIV epidemic, access to information and education concerning HIV prevention is of utmost importance in stemming the tide of new infections. A decade ago most infections were amongst those who inject drugs but in recent years a shift has been seen towards more sexual transmission. In particular, gay men and other men who have sex with men (MSM) are most at risk and therefore most in need of community support and education.

A decade-long effort in eliminating DDT was drawn to a close at the wrap-up conference for the Alternative DDT usage for Antifouling Paint Production in China Project on October 17th. UNDP Assistant Country Director, Mr. Carsten Germer, along with representatives from FECO, line governmental officials and private sectors witnessed the realization of the most recent milestone of this project.

Everyone seems to know about the dangers of smoking, yet the devastation caused through consumption of tobacco continues: 1 million people die in China alone from tobacco-related illnesses every year, claiming one third of the estimated 300 million smokers. 1 in every 3 cigarettes smoked on the whole planet is consumed here in China and if the current average smoking rate of 28 percent is not reduced, the future impact of tobacco-related illnesses for the health system, society and the economy will be catastrophic.

A week long initiative called the China-Bangladesh Urban Solutions Lab kicked off at the UN compound on September 22nd. The Lab came about as a result of a meeting on solutions to reduce urban poverty between China and a number of other developing countries in October 2013.

The China-Cambodia-UNDP trilateral cassava project, the first pilot trilateral cooperation project between China and UNDP, successfully completed Phase II with a week-long “Business-Matching” mission. From September 15th to 22nd, the Cambodian delegation met with relevant Chinese government officials, representatives from the local cassava companies and experts in Nanning and Fangchenggang, Guangxi province.

Saving our Tuna, a new half-hour documentary to be broadcast across Asia in June for World Oceans Day, takes you to the richest fishing grounds on the planet, where fleets of fishing vessels equipped with sonar, and sophisticated satellite tracking devices are catching millions of tons of tuna, making it the third most harvested fish in the ocean.
