The European Union and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) launched a project which aims to build confidence through cultural protection in Kosovo in a ceremony attended by Kujtim Shala, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Alessandra Roccasalvo, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative, Christof Stock, Head of Cooperation Section, European Union Office in Kosovo, Mayors of beneficiary municipalities, religious representatives, representatives of the Kosovo Police and EULEX and many other guests.

In her opening speech. Ms. Roccasalvo extended her appreciation to EU for the support and emphasized that the project is a joint effort to preserve the Kosovo heritage.

Minister Shala congratulated the initiative and reconfirmed that preservation and protection of the heritage sites according to the international conventions is a priority for the Ministry.

Mr. Stock, on behalf of the EU Office in Kosovo, expressed his pleasure at being at the launch of a very important project particularly taking into consideration the rich Kosovo heritage. He also emphasized that it is up to every individual to protect that heritage.

"The 'Confidence Building through Cultural Protection in Kosovo' project is a continuation of the efforts made previously by the EU towards preservation of cultural heritage in Kosovo. Through this project, the EU wants to promote economic growth, employment, and social cohesion, rehabilitate sites of common cultural heritage and promote tolerance and respect for Kosovo’s diverse cultural heritage. The project should contribute to foster the understanding that sites of cultural heritage are heritage of every Kosovan citizen and not only of one community.  Therefore, I highly appreciate the direct involvement of the local population in this project, "Stock said.

The project, funded by EU and implemented by UNDP, will regenerate selected cultural and religious sites in five municipalities and build capacities to promote, monitor, and protect heritage sites. The total EU budget for this project is over 1.5 million Euros to be implemented over a period of 12 months.
