In 2012, the EU contributed over EUR 258 million to UNDP activities across the world in the fields of Democratic Governance, Crisis Prevention and Recovery, and Environment. Over the period 2003-2012, the EU has granted almost EUR 3.3 billion in support of UNDP's interventions.

The 2013 Human Development Report -"The Rise of the South: Human Progress in a Diverse World" was officially presented in Brussels at a public round table event held on 23 April 2013. UNDP also presented the report on 24 April 2013 to a special joint meeting of the Committees on Development and Foreign Affairs of the European Parliament and to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation of Belgium.

The 3rd Assises of Decentralized Cooperation were organized in Brussels on April 9-10 by the Committee of the Regions and the European Commission On this occasion, UNDP arranged, through the ART Initiative, an associated seminar “Decentralized Cooperation: towards a Multi-stakeholder and Multi-level Approach".

In the last 10 years, the EU has supported a wide range of UNDP programmes addressing many different aspects of crisis prevention and recovery.

In cooperation with the European Union, UNDP organized a thematic workshop from 4 to 8 March 2013 in Maputo, Mozambique, that explored the main issues related to sustainability in electoral administration and allocation of adequate resources to ensure credible elections. This joint initiative that gathered around 200 participants from 45 countries brought to the forefront the issue of the costs and funding of electoral processes and their impact on sustainability and integrity of electoral administration.

New cross border cooperation between Montenegro & Croatia: Development of ICT for Outdoor Destinations
The European Union has awarded UNDP in February 2013 a new grant of over EUR 276,000 for strengthening cross-border tourism cooperation between Montenegro and Croatia. The project will stimulate local economy in the cross-border area through bringing together private and public sector in the field of tourism and leveraging new technologies to design user-centric tourism services.

The 2013 Human Development Report – "The Rise of the South: Human Progress in a Diverse World" – will be launched on 14 March in Mexico City by President Enrique Peña Nieto of Mexico and UNDP Administrator Helen Clark. A pre-launch “under embargo” press briefing of the report with Brussels-based press will be organized at UNDP, UN House (14 Rue Montoyer) on 12 March 2013, from 10:00 to 11:00 hours.

UNDP and EU jointly implemented in China project entitled “Governance for Equitable Development” (GED) during a period of five years (2007-2012) in China. This project, which recently came to an end, has led to improved access to justice and law-making process, and to a more favorable policy and legal environment for civil society organizations in China.

In 2011, the European Union ranked third in the listing of top-donors to UNDP’s total resources (includes both regular and other resources). When considering contributions to “other resources” which consist of earmarked contributions, the EU ranked second.

EU has awarded UNDP a new contract worth EUR 500,000 to continue to support the drafting and adoption of a new Constitution for Zimbabwe. As part of the agenda to support democratic transformation in the country, the UNDP-EU partnership has since 2009 assisted the Zimbabwean authorities to prepare and conduct a participatory, inclusive and transparent constitution making process.

The European External Action Service (EEAS) organized on 16 January 2012 a new edition of the course on the EU-UN Partnership for EU staff working in the field of external relations, both at Headquarters and EU Delegations at country level. This training, which belongs to the EEAS catalogue of knowledge-based courses, is jointly organized by the EU and UN on a periodic manner as part of the efforts to promote institutional understanding among them.

In March 2012, over 230 electoral practitioners from over 60 countries came together in Mombasa, Kenya, to review and discuss the use of information and communication technology (ICT) in civil- and voter registration. The workshop was organized by UNDP and the EU, and the Joint EC-UNDP Task Force on Electoral Assistance has now released the final report of the workshop as a way to spread the information and lessons learned from the workshop.

With EU and UNDP support, Serbia’s Ministry of Interior organized an activity on 20 December 2012 to destroy 17,000 small arms and light weapons (SALW). This brings the total number of destroyed SALWs with EU-funding in Serbia to 45,285. EU and UNDP also supported the earlier destruction of 30,000 SALWs in Croatia.
