    EEAS staff gain understanding on the EU-UN partnership

    The European External Action Service (EEAS) organized on 16 January 2012 a new edition of the course on the EU-UN Partnership for EU staff working in the field of external relations, both at Headquarters and EU Delegations at country level. This training, which belongs to the EEAS catalogue of knowledge-based courses, is jointly organized by the EU and UN on a periodic manner as part of the efforts to promote institutional understanding among them.

    The EU and Germany contribute €10 million to UNDP to help countries reduce greenhouse gas emissions

    The European Commission and the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) have each announced a €5 million contribution to United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to help assist 25 developing countries around the world reduce their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

    New report on electoral assistance

    In March 2012, over 230 electoral practitioners from over 60 countries came together in Mombasa, Kenya, to review and discuss the use of information and communication technology (ICT) in civil- and voter registration. The workshop was organized by UNDP and the EU, and the Joint EC-UNDP Task Force on Electoral Assistance has now released the final report of the workshop as a way to spread the information and lessons learned from the workshop.

    Serbia destroyed 45,285 small arms and light weapons with EU support

    With EU and UNDP support, Serbia’s Ministry of Interior organized an activity on 20 December 2012 to destroy 17,000 small arms and light weapons (SALW). This brings the total number of destroyed SALWs with EU-funding in Serbia to 45,285. EU and UNDP also supported the earlier destruction of 30,000 SALWs in Croatia.

The primary focus of the course can be summarized in the question: how can you determine if the technologies proposed for electoral management are sustainable and appropriate for the environment in which they are being considered?

    EU and UNDP partner on biodiversity and climate change in Europe

    The EU and UNDP have signed an agreement to support climate change mitigation and adaptation in Russia and Eastern Neighborhood countries. Through innovative pilot projects under the ‘Clima East’ programme, the hope is to demonstrate that ecosystems can have a strong, positive and cost-efficient effect on climate change mitigation and adaptation.

    Drumming for Peace, Fishing for Human Rights, Aiming for Development - UN Day 2012 in Brussels

    "I've been coming every year for the past three years and I just wanted to say that it gets better and better." For the third consecutive year, the UN team in Brussels, coordinated by the UN Regional Information Centre (UNRIC), with the support of the City of Brussels, the Belgian Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Defence, invited the general public to come and celebrate UN Day at an interactive, information village on the Grand Place, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

    EU partners with UN to boost impact

    Assistance for the crises in the Sahel and the Horn of Africa, and stimulating ongoing action to achieve the Millennium Development Goals, were high on the agenda at a meeting today between European Commissioner for Development Andris Piebalgs and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Administrator Helen Clark. It was the first in a series of bilateral discussions the Administrator will hold with valued UNDP partners in the margins of the UN General Assembly.

    UNDP-EU discuss strategic partnership

    UNDP Administrator Helen Clark met with EU Commissioner Andris Piebalgs to review the UNDP-EU Strategic Partnership and to look at the way forward. In a joint statement after the meeting, they reaffirmed their wish to develop the EU-UNDP cooperation in areas of common interest, and to continue working together towards the objective of establishing solid foundations for peace, development and recovery from the economic crisis and to promote the Millennium Development Goals and sustainable development.
