Today is an important day for international co-operation with the countries affected by Ebola. Now is the time to lay the foundations for sustained economic and social recovery from the Ebola crisis in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. The Governments of the three countries have made that very clear, and are in the process of developing their recovery strategies, while also being determined to drive towards zero cases of Ebola as soon as possible.

Being UNDP and not a medical organization, our focus is mainly not on the direct treatment for Ebola patients. Instead, to complement the work of the many excellent organizations that are building and staffing Ebola hospitals, we’re working to prevent the further spread of the disease in poor communities, and helping to keep the countries’ economies and societies from collapsing in terror and paralysis.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the UN Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) launched a new funding facility, inviting financial service providers to develop new ways of enabling low-income and rural Pacific Islanders to access affordable savings, insurance, credit and other financial services.

UNDP, together with the European Union, will support communities’ renovation projects in eight rayons (counties) that are now considered relatively safe, and will help towns hosting internally displaced persons (IDPs) to prepare for the upcoming winter. In addition, the UNDP-EU project will implement a program aimed at reintegration of the IDPs.
