    Guinea-Bissau votes in bid for stability

    Voters in Guinea-Bissau headed to the polls on Sunday 13 April, in a presidential and parliamentary election many hope will bring stability to the tiny West African nation. UNDP has has been supporting the election cycle in the country, managing a USD $6.6 million basket fund that includes financing from the EU and other donors.

    Winners at the 2014 Millenium Film Festival

    The film ”‘Life Sentences”, from the Israeli filmmakers Nurit Kedar and Yaron Shani, was awarded the“Objectif d’Or”, the Grand Award of the 6th edition of the Millenium Film Festival, which successfully concluded in Brussels on 11 April 2014.

    “Ash and Money” opens 2014 edition of the Millenium MDG Festival

    The opening ceremony of the sixth edition of the international Millenium documentary film festival, on 3 April, featured “Ash and Money”, an Estonian movie directed by Tiit Ojasoo and Ene-Liis Semper about the state of affairs in democracy, the media and grass-roots society. The movie is set in March 2010 when the popular “NO99 Theatre” announced that it would attempt to create a new successful and energetic super-party, “Unified Estonia”, through commonly used political communication tricks.

    UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon at Millenium Film Festival preview in Brussels

    On 2 April the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon attended a preview of the sixth edition of the Millenium Film Festival to be held in Brussels over the next few days. Mr. Ban Ki-moon was joined for the occasion by the EU Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response, Kristalina Georgieva and over 110 staff of the United Nations in Brussels.

    Outcomes of the 10-year review of the Strategic Partnership Agreement between the European Union and the United Nations Development Programme

    The tenth anniversary of the Strategic Partnership Agreement between UNDP and the EU, jointly signed in 2004, was observed in February 2014. To mark this occasion, UNDP launched a 10-year report on its partnership with the EU with held discussions with DEVCO to review the status and identify areas for future collaboration.

    Reducing poverty in the world

    Professor Bhagwati will speak at the next Kapuscinski development lectures to be held on 19 March 2014 at 3:30pm at the College of Europe in Bruges (Belgium). He will draw on India's experience and the lessons it offers in finding effective ways to reduce poverty.

    Celebrating the first bloom of the Arab Spring: Tunisia adopts its new Constitution

    On 27 January 2014, the new Constitution of Tunisia was adopted by an overwhelming majority of the National Constituent Assembly, marking a historic moment for the country. This is Tunisia’s first democratic constitution and opens a new chapter in the country’s democratic transition. Since 2012, UNDP, through its Constitutional Support Project (2012-15), has been a key partner in providing support to the constitutional process and capacity development to the NCA. The project was supported by various donors, including the EU.

    Territorial Approach in the Post-2015 during the 2013 European Development Days

    The 8th edition of the European Development Days organized by the European Commission brought to Brussels thousands of development practitioners, advocates and decision-makers to debate on the approach to successfully finish off the Millennium Development Goals and outline their vision for a post-2015 development framework. In this context, the Barcelona Provincial Council, the EU Committee of the Regions and UNDP joined forces in the organization of two panels on the topic of the Territorial Approach in the post-2015.

    The II World Forum of Local Economic Development

    The II World Forum of Local Economic Development was held in Brazil from 29 October to 1 November. Organized in three plenary sessions and forty-four panels, the Forum enabled a truly effective sharing of innovative policies and practices in different thematic areas within the field of local economic development. The Forum gathered 4,300 delegates of local, regional and national authorities, including a wide range of European representatives.

    Girls as drivers of change – European Week of Action for Girls

    The third annual European Week of Action for Girls is taking place from 11 to 18 October 2013, timed to coincide with the International Day of the Girl Child on 11 October. This week of policy, media, campaigning and youth events is centered in and around the EU institutions, highlighting the barriers girls face worldwide in accessing their rights.     The UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon presented today a new report “A Million Voices: The World We Want”. The report summarizes the findings from public consultations and surveys that engaged more than 1.3 million people in all 193 UN Member States since August 2012 in an effort to identify priorities for the post-2015 development agenda that will succeed the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
