EU funding to UNDP

The EU is an important actor globally in development and humanitarian aid, and in peace and security. The EU contributions to UNDP over the last decade have been considerable. In 2012 alone, we signed 87 financial agreements and secured the total value of EUR 258 million. In 2011, the EU contributions represented close to 10 percent of the so called earmarked contributions that UNDP received outside its regular resources, and made the EU the top third donor to UNDP, after Japan and the United States of America. Over the period 2003-2012, the EU contributed almost EUR 3.3 billion to UNDP's activities around the world.

EU contributions to UNDP have increased significantly over the last decade (peaking in 2005 as a consequence of the reconstruction efforts in Iraq, Afghanistan and Sudan) and remaining at a significant level since.

Funding by practice area

In the last decade, the focus of our partnership has been in the areas of Democratic Governance and Crisis Prevention and Recovery, which is clearly demonstrated by the picture below. This focus of the partnership represents the engagement that was made when we entered into a Strategic Partnership in 2004. Poverty Reduction and Environment & Energy are two other areas where we work together. Our engagement in the area of Environment & Energy has been increasing in the last years, as illustrated below.

Funding by geographic region

During the period 2003-2012, the EU has funded UNDP-programmes and projects around the world. A majority of the funding during this period went to Asia and the Pacific region (EUR 908 million), where Afghanistan and Bangladesh have been some of the countries where our partnership has been especially extensive.
