Energy is central to sustainable development and poverty reduction efforts. It affects all aspects of development - social, economic, and environmental - including livelihoods, access to water, agricultural productivity, health, population levels, education, and gender-related issues. None of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) can be met without major improvement in the quality and quantity of energy services in developing countries.

In the area of energy, UNDP and EU are working together on a global programme which helps parliaments draft policy frameworks in support of renewable energy and climate change mitigation. The programme works with parliaments in Africa, the Arab States and in South Asia.

In Azerbaijan, we helped with the development of the national strategy for 2012-2020, which now includes pilot initiatives for solar, wind and bio renewable energy sources. The partnership also reached out to students with education to raise awareness about alternative energies.

In Moldova, the Moldova Energy and Biomass project (co-funded by EU-UNDP and implemented by UNDP), is currently the most ambitious initiative in the field of promoting renewable energy, especially biomass energy, in the country. The project aims to contribute to a more secure, competitive and sustainable energy production through targeted support to biomass from agricultural waste. Over 130 kindergartens, schools, health centers and other rural public institutions as well as over 500 households will be heated with biomass-based energy.

In the Dominican Republic the partnership supported 1,510 rural families to gain access to energy from micro-hydro systems.
