Strategy for Small Arms and Light Weapons Control in Bosnia and Herzegovina 2013-2016

The Strategy is a comprehensive document that aims to enhance efficiency of all stakeholders in the area of SALW control in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The document particularly focuses on bringing the legislations in line with international standards, improving control over internal and external trade in weapons, decreasing the rate of incidents involving illegal weapons and as well as the numbers of illegal weapons owned by the population, boosting of citizens’ confidence in BiH bodies at all levels, and reducing surplus SALW in the possession of BiH Ministry of Defence.

By implementing the set strategic objectives, as well as by building on the international and regional cooperation in this field, Bosnia and Herzegovina contributes not only to advancing of general security locally, but also regionally and globally.

The Strategy recognises areas of strategic importance for SALW control improvement in Bosnia and Herzegovina and defines them through four strategic goals as follows:

  • Improvement of legal framework and implementation of SALW legislation;
  • Reduction of illegal SALW;
  • Management of SALW that is in possession of BiH competent agencies and institutions;
  • International and regional cooperation and cooperation with NGOs.

The Strategy includes specific projects to facilitate activities defined by Strategic Goals.
