Regional Post-2015 Consultations take place across Bhutan
In March of 2013, members of the UN Country Team in Bhutan joined The Bhutanese Broadcasting Service (BBS) in a tour around the country in order to take part in the international Post-2015 Consultations, arranged by the UN Development Group.
Globally, the UN is undertaking a vast exercise to ask people on the ground, all over the world, what they think the global development agenda should look like, and what their priorities are, after the Millennium Development Goals come to an end in just over 1000 days, at the end of 2015.
In Bhutan, the UN has arranged for a series of televised consultations, to be facilitated and broadcast by the BBS, to take place in 5 of the country's 20 Dzongkhags (districts): Bumthang, Trashigang, Samdrupjongkhar, Phuentsholing and Thimphu. The consultations are in the process of being broadcast on the show 'People's Voice'.
The country's citizens have expressed their support for many of the government's development goals, especially in relation to the Four Pillars of Gross National Happiness. Across Dzongkhags, people noted the importance of maintaining the country's goals of: Sustainable and Equitable Socio-Economic Development (through ensuring urban-rural balance, reduction of economic inequality, and expanding infrastructure and community ownership), Conservation of the Environment, Preservation and Promotion of Culture, and Good Governance (through strong economic policy, decentralization, and ensuring support for the country's agriculturalists). Education was also a major theme, being something that is thought to support the country's development goals in all realms and at all levels.
Results from these consultations will be presented to the UN in order to help it prioritize what the global development agenda will be Post-2015. The voices of the people around the country have been heard, and will have the opportunity to influence the world's progress over the decades to come.
