    Human rights awareness program for garments workers

    The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Bangladesh and Marks and Spencer jointly organized a human rights awareness campaign for garment workers in ready-made garment factories. As a pilot effort, 4 cultural shows were organized from 16 to 19 September, 2013 in Interstoff and Epyllion Style factories in Gazipur. 3000 garment workers attended the campaign.

    Taking human rights rural

    The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Bangladesh and Jatiya Tarun Sangha (JTS) jointly organized training on promoting human rights awareness in rural communities from 14 to 15 September in Dhaka. 16 staff of JTS comprising of clinic managers, counselors, paramedics, and service promoters of the rural clinics attended the training. They came from 8 clinics out of 27 run by JTS across the country.

And were heard in the Parliament of Bangladesh Oath Room by no less an august audience than the Honourable Deputy Speaker, Members of Parliament from both the Ruling and Opposition Parties, Parliament Secretariat officials, the UNDP Country Director of Bangladesh, civil society leaders, academicians and youth representatives.

    Strengthening local government institutions emphasized

    Speakers at a divisional level policy dialogue stressed the need for strengthening the capacity of local government institutions (LGIs) to make those fully functional, democratic and transparent entities. They also laid emphasis on carrying out reforms in the existing Local Government (LG) system to empower the LGIs at all levels to deliver quality services to citizens.

    Promoting eco-friendly brick making to women entrepreneurs

    A joint workshop titled Towards Women Entrepreneurship in brick related Green Businesses was held on 12 September at Lakeshore Hotel, Dhaka. With support from Global Gender and Climate Alliance, UNDP-GEF funded GREEN Brick project in collaboration with Bangladesh Women Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BWCCI) organized the workshop to promote energy efficient brick making business among Bangladeshi women entrepreneurs.

    Integrating poor women into city governance

    Women in Bangladesh suffer under pervasive gender discrimination. Access to justice and services such as secondary and tertiary education and health remain far lower for women than for men. Significantly fewer women are employed and the ones that are receive considerably lower average salaries compared to their male co-workers.

    SSIP project document signed

    On September 12, 2013, UNDP and the Government of Bangladesh launched its newest project, Supporting Sustainable and Inclusive Development. UNDP and Government staff were on hand as Robert Jukham, UNDP Deputy Country Director, and Ashadul Islam, Additional Secretary of the UN Wing at the Government’s Economic Relations Division (ERD), formally signed off on this major initiative.

    Workshop on bringing CCA and DRR together

    On 10 September 2013, a national policy consultation workshop was jointly organized UNDP and CDMP II at the Bangabandhu International Conference Center. The objective of the workshop was to bring the concept, practice and institutions in disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation together for a common objective to make vulnerable communities resilient.

    Digital solutions for service delivery

    A four-day innovation camp aiming to solve social issues through the use of technology in Bangladesh ended on Saturday, with three winners and at least 20 digital solutions that people can now work with. UNDP and USAID Supported Access to Information (a2i) Programme of the Prime Minister's Office and Google Developers Group, Dhaka United International University jointly organised this camp.

    Mainstreaming migration essential to Bangladesh’s development strategy

    A two-day long workshop on Mainstreaming Migration into National Development Strategies commenced today in the Marble Room at Ruposhi Bangla Hotel in Dhaka. The workshop is part of an SDC-supported IOM-UNDP joint global project entitled ‘Mainstreaming Migration into National Development Strategies,’ which is being implemented in Jamaica, Moldova, Tunisia and Bangladesh.

    NSPS convergence meeting held

    A convergence meeting after two study tours to South Africa and Nepal to gain international insight and learn social protection best practices was organized at the Cabinet Meeting Room on September 4, 2013. The meeting was chaired by Cabinet Secretary and attended by nine secretaries from different Ministries, other high level government officials, the participants of study tours, UNDP Country Director Ms. Pauline Tamesis, and representatives from AusAID and DFID.
