Each year on International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, we can recommit to that goal, and, in the words of the UN Secretary-General's message for this day this year, plan for a world where no-one is left behind. Since 1990, the baseline date against which Millennium Development Goal progress is measured, hundreds of millions of people have moved out of extreme poverty and attained better access to health care and education. Globally, extreme poverty has reduced by half since 1990; the goal of enrolling all children in primary schools is close to being met; child mortality has been significantly reduced, and 2.3 billion people have gained access to improved drinking water.

Yerevan, 01 October 2014 - On 28-30 September Helen Clark, Administrator of UNDP and Chair of the UN Development Group came to Armenia on her first visit to the country. In discussions with government, civil society, women leaders, and international development partners, Clark emphasized the principle of citizen engagement in designing development assistance– ““UNDP is engaging with Armenia’s people and government to build development solutions to the challenges of today and the future. Armenians are very pragmatic and highly capable people. During my short visit I have been very impressed with the level of professionalism and talent here. I am also encouraged by the emerging women’s leadership, including at the local level”.

Yerevan, 05 November 2013 – Capitalizing on the successful partnership and joint achievements in increasing youth employability, today Bradley Busetto, UNDP Resident Coordinator/UNDP Resident Representative in Armenia, and Harout Nercessian, Armenia Representative of Armenian Missionary Association of America (AMAA), signed an agreement to further continue the Youth Career Trail (YCT) project. Former beneficiaries of the YCT were also present at the signing ceremony, who shared with participants their experiences and ideas on further expansion of the initiative.

Yerevan, 07 October 2013 – The city of Gyumri is gifted with rich historical and cultural monuments. During centuries a unique architectural style has been formed in Gyumri, with more than 1,600 historical-architectural buildings covering an area of about 220 hectares. Most of them were built in the same period - 19th and beginning of 20th centuries. However, during the recent years the city’s historical and cultural heritage has suffered due to the 1988 devastating earthquake and insufficient funding and investments by public and private sectors. This, in its turn, hindered community development and investment flows to the second largest city of Armenia.

Yerevan, 13 September 2013 – For his instrumental role in supporting sustainable development in Armenia, for his efforts in the country aimed at reducing poverty, bridging regional disparities, creating jobs and improving the quality of services, today the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Armenia appointed Eduardo Eurnekian, a prominent Argentinean-Armenian businessman and one of the largest investors in Armenia, as its first ever National Goodwill Ambassador.

60 Armenian fresh graduates were hosted in 21 local companies for 6-month paid internship as a result of the 4th round of UNDP “Youth Career Trail” project, co-sponsored by Armenian Missionary Association of America (AMAA). Thirty of the graduates have been employed at the location of their internships. The other thirty are expected to find employment shortly as they have earned valuable job experience.

Around 55 percent of college graduates find employment after graduating from vocational education (VET) institutions, while the average timeframe to find a job is six months, reveals the 2010-2011 VET Graduate Tracer Study, launched today with participation of Armen Ashotyan, Minister of Education and Science, and Sophie Kemkhadze, UNDP Officer-in-Charge.
