KENYA
Pastoralist Integrated Support Programme (PISP)
PISP works with over 11,000 pastoral people in the Marsabit region of northern Kenya to reduce drought vulnerability through community water harvesting and to protect dryland biodiversity from over-grazing, through the strategic management of herd movements around vulnerable water points. This remote initiative works in some of the driest and, seemingly, most inhospitable habitat on Earth. Yet, they have had great success in reducing the vulnerability of nomadic communities through the restoration of highly flexible, traditional water management systems.
This initiative was also one of Equator Prize 2004 Finalists. More information... |
