Integrating Adaptation into Development

To address climate change effectively and achieve the MDGs we will need to 'do development differently'. This requires not only doing development better, but also adapting development policies to take climate change into account. UNDP activities seek to incorporate climate change risks and opportunities into national strategies and plans and UNDP/UN development assistance.

  1. National Strategies and Plans: UNDP assists countries to develop overarching national adaptation programmes where climate change risks are routinely considered as part of national planning and fiscal policies formulation. Such activities ensure that information about climate-related risks, vulnerability, and options for adaptation are incorporated into planning and decision-making in climate-sensitive sectors (e.g. agriculture, water, health, disaster risk management and coastal development), as well as into existing development plans and poverty reduction efforts (e.g. Poverty Reduction Strategies Papers - PRSPs).

  2. UNDP/UN Development Assistance: UNDP works to routinely integrate risks and opportunities associated with climate change, including variability, into UNDP/UN programming. In partnership with UNEP and other key partners, UNDP supports the development of methodologies that would also facilitate this integration effort into country development assistance frameworks.

UNDP’s efforts to integrate climate change adaptation in development activities are listed below. Press on their links to find out more.
