8 May 2007 (Putrajaya, Malaysia): Dato' Seri Azmi launches Publication on Protecting the Ozone Layer

The Minister of Natural Resources and Environment (DOE), Dato’ Seri Azmi Khalid launched a UNDP publication entitled ‘Protecting the Ozone Layer: Malaysia Implementing the Montreal Protocol’ on 8 May 2007 in Putrajaya. The launch, jointly organized by UNDP and the Department of Environment, was attended by Dr Richard Leete, Resident Representative of UNDP and the Director of DOE’s Air Division, Puan Hjh. Kalsom Abd. Ghani.

The publication contains information about ozone layer depletion and protection and showcases efforts undertaken by the Malaysian government to implement the Montreal Protocol. The publication was produced in collaboration with the Ozone Protection Section (OPS), the DOE and the Crop Protection and Plant Quarantine Division of the Department of Agriculture. It was noted in the publication that Malaysia is on track to completely phase-out the use of CFCs by 2010.

Since ratification of the Montreal Protocol in 1989, Malaysia has worked towards reducing consumption of ozone depleting substances. At the launch, Dato’ Seri Azmi Khalid said that “Malaysia should be proud as we have taken the lead among developing nations in successfully implementing the Montreal Protocol.” “We have managed to reduce our consumption of CFC from 3,442 million tonnes in 1995 to just 662 million tones in 2007,” he said during his speech.

“It is hoped that other countries may learn from Malaysia’s experiences, and that greater efforts and commitment will be shown towards reducing the use of ozone-depleting substances,” said Dr Richard Leete in his speech.
