Protection of International Waters from Chemical Pollution

Examples of UNDP programmes in the area of reducing and preventing chemical pollution that help protect and restore international waters :

Caspian Sea: Strengthening the pollution reduction capacities of the Caspian Sea countries through surveys and assessments, awareness raising, small-scale investments, and development of persistent toxic substances action plans

Danube River Basin: Helping Central European countries introduce cleaner production technologies and practices and sustainable business models to reduce industrial pollution releases to the Danube river basin (UNIDO-executed)

Danube-Black Sea Basin: Reducing nutrient pollution in the Danube-Black Sea basin (in partnership with the World Bank, UNEP and the European Union)

Global: Introduction of alternative mining technologies and practices to reduce emissions of mercury from artisanal gold mining in six pilot countries (UNIDO-executed)

Dnipro River Basin: Reducing industrial chemical pollution in the Dnipro River basin through introduction of cleaner production, sustainable financing, harmonized legislation and improved environmental monitoring (in partnership with IDRC, UNIDO, UNEP and IAEA)

Managing Chemicals for Sustainable Development

International co-ordination and co-operation efforts towards improved chemicals management, such as through the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management 9SAICM) adopted in 2006, and chemicals related Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs), create global partnerships and initiatives.

Global partnerships and initiatives help countries integrate SMC objectives into national and local development policies and plans, while simultaneously identifying options to catalyze necessary supporting finance.
