20 Years of the Montreal Protocol

The Montreal Protocol has been recognized globally as a success, evidence of which can be gleaned from the massive reductions in ODS use worldwide since it came into force in 1987. Described by Kofi Annan as "perhaps the most successful international agreement to date" the Montreal Protocol will celebrate its 20th Anniversary on international Ozone Day 2007 (16 September).

In the months leading up to the 20th Anniversary celebration, UNDP will showcase activities that it has undertaking with some 100 developing countries to help them meet their targets under the Montreal Protocol. In the month of June, activities that have assisted foam producing companies worldwide to convert to Ozone-friendly technologies and stop the use of CFCs will be in the spotlight. More...

The use of foam products in our every day lives is widespread, varied and goes largely unnoticed. It is likely that foams are used to insulate your refrigerator, water heater, and perhaps even house and office. But you can also find them in cushions such as the ones in your office chair, car seat, or furniture at home. Through concerted global action more than 99% of CFC use had been discontinued by 2005 – and for the most part, consumers were not able to tell the difference. More...
