Capacity development for reaching the MDGs through fostering cross-border cooperation between Bulgaria and Romania

Period: 2004 - 2005

Objectives

The overall objective of the PA project is to help local communities in two Danube-South Euro regions to develop capacity for meeting the MDGs within the framework of Agenda 21. The two Euro regions include municipalities on the two banks of Danube River: Russe (Bulgaria) and Giurgiu (Romania); and Svishtov (Bulgaria) and Zimnich (Romania).

Activities

The Regional Agenda(s) 21 process will be developed providing the platform and the framework for developing capacities for integrated strategies and programming and for moving from planning to implementation. Two demonstration projects that address shared development priorities of the municipalities within the two Euro regions will be formulated and partnerships opportunities will be explored for securing funds for their implementation. An important result of the Regional Agenda 21 process will be the creation of new economic and employment opportunities based on the shared river resource - both a large source of existing incomes and an opportunity for new incomes.
