Gender mainstreaming

Gender equality has been a crosscutting theme throughout Canada's development cooperation, which has established an international reputation in this field, with gender equality results systematically and explicitly integrated across all programming.

The goals of Canada's gender policy are:

  • to advance women's equal participation with men as decision-makers in shaping the sustainable development of their societies;
  • to support women and girls in the realization of their full human rights;
  • to reduce gender inequalities in access to and control over the resources and benefits of development.

Canada has also tracked UNDP’s performance in this area by consistently assessing the advancement of gender mainstreaming both globally and at the level of country programmes.
