World Resources 2005:
The Wealth of the Poor – Managing Ecosystems to Fight Poverty

The 2005 World Resources Report, jointly produced by the United Nations Development Programme, the United Nations Environment Programme, the World Bank and the World Resources Institute was launched on Wednesday 31 August 2005, at a timely moment in the lead up to the mid-September 2005 World Summit in NY.

World Resources 2005 is about simple propositions that resonate with the 2005 Summit agenda. Its main message is that “natural resources and ecosystems can be a route to wealth creation when good governance empowers the poor”. The report details the steps necessary to empower the poor to use ecosystems both wisely and for wealth. It also highlights that tenure, access, representation and decentralization through Community Based Natural Resource Management (CBNRM) – are the changes required to bring power to the poor. Through dozens of case studies, the report traces a path to greater environmental income and demonstrates how local stewardship of nature can be a powerful means of fighting poverty when the right regulatory frameworks are in place.

Copies of the report, graphics and other materials can be downloaded from the World Resources Institute website. Versions in Spanish, Chinese, Portuguese, French, Dutch and Norwegian are also available online.
