Ekuri Initiative (Equator Prize 2004 Finalist)
The
Ekuri initiative was founded in 1992 by two Ekuri villages in the buffer
zone of Cross River National Park. Formerly under pressure from logging
companies to relinquish their property rights to 33,600 hectares of
communally-owned forest lands, the villagers opted instead to sustainably
manage the resources. This dynamic initiative works to promote community
forestry and sustainable harvesting of timber, vegetables, rattan and
other non-timber forest products from these lands. Revenue generated
from the sale of these products has enabled the Ekuri people to build
a minimal-impact road connecting them directly to the closest markets,
thereby increasing household incomes and eliminating costly middlemen.
At the same time, by putting their incomes into sustainable enterprises,
the Ekuri have ensured that their unique forest ecosystem remains intact
for generations to come.
